I love when people can see themselves in my artwork through our shared stories and traditions.

I hope to capture the energy of the city with images of businesses and individuals working together to create an inclusive and sustainable space for all. Representation is a key message throughout my artwork as I question the systems in place that overlook black and brown bodies. Each of these images are meant to inspire new methods of using art to channel your voice and create an impact.

My name is Philipo Dyauli and I am a self-taught painter and illustrator from Tanzania based in Minneapolis. My work is primarily acrylic paintings on canvas inspired by favorite painters, music, films, and the natural world. I use scale as a tool to illustrate the importance of individuals over material objects, while color helps energize and highlight underrepresented groups. I incorporate my Tanzanian roots and personal experiences to create artwork that reflects life in the United States and East Africa. This often involves depictions of favorite family traditions, friends and personal heroes. In addition to my studio practice, I serve on the board for Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA), an organization that supports local artists with resources, promotion and fellowship.
